The
Higher Learning Commission (HLC) is a part of
the North Central Association of Colleges and
Schools (NCA). NCA was founded in 1895 as a membership
organisation for educational institutions. The
HLC is recognized by the
Secretary of Education and the Committee on Recognition
of Post-secondary Accreditation (CORPA, now
continued under the Council on Higher Education
Accreditation, or CHEA).
The
NCA is one of the six regional institutional
accrediting associations in the United States.
Through its Commissions, NCA accredits and thereby grants membership to 19 educational institutions
in the North Central region: Arkansas, Arizona,
Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan,
Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska,
Ohio, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Wisconsin,
West Virginia and Wyoming.
The
purpose and goal of NCA is to develop and maintain
high academic standards of excellence. Therefore,
NCA holds a strong commitment that sustains and
advances higher learning. Accordingly, the commission’s
processes will support colleges and universities
in demonstrating their ability to make continuous
improvement in the quality of the educational
activities, degree programs, and learning outcomes
that they provide.
The
